Understanding Domain Names
What is a domain name?
A domain name is the human-readable address used to access websites on the Internet—like example.com. Behind the scenes, computers use numeric IP addresses to communicate, but domain names make it easier for people to find and remember online locations. Every domain name is unique and serves as the primary identifier for a website, email services and other online functions.
Why do I need a domain name?
A domain name gives your website a unique, recognizable identity on the Internet. It’s what people type into their browser to find your site, and it establishes credibility for your business or personal brand. Without a domain name, visitors would have to remember a string of numbers (your IP address), which isn’t practical. Your domain also allows you to create custom email addresses and build a consistent presence online.
Is the "www." part of my domain name?
No. The “www.” prefix is a subdomain traditionally used to designate web traffic, standing for “World Wide Web.” It’s not technically part of your registered domain name. Today, most websites are configured to respond to both “www.yourdomain.com” and “yourdomain.com” interchangeably.
Which characters can I use in my domain name?
Domain names can normally include letters, numbers and hyphens (-), but they cannot begin or end with a hyphen. They also cannot contain spaces, underscores (_), or any other special characters or punctuation. Domain names are not case sensitive.

While technically allowed, it’s best to avoid using multiple hyphens or placing them consecutively (e.g., my–domain.com), as this can make your domain harder to read, remember, or type correctly. For branding and usability, shorter, clearer names with minimal dashes are generally more effective.

Additionally, internationalized domain names (IDNs) are available, allowing you to use characters from non-Latin alphabets, such as Arabic, Chinese, or Cyrillic, in your domain name. This can help cater to global audiences and enhance your international online presence.

How long can my domain name be?
A domain name can be up to 63 characters long, excluding the Top-Level Domain (TLD) extension (like .com, .net or .org). When including the TLD and any subdomains such as “www.”, the total length of your domain name can be up to 253 characters.

While you can use the full length available, it’s generally a good idea to choose a shorter, more memorable name. Shorter domain names are easier to type, remember and are better for branding.

How do I choose the right domain name?
When choosing a domain name, aim for something short, memorable, and easy to spell. Ideally, it should reflect your business name, brand or the nature of your services. Avoid using hyphens, numbers or uncommon spellings if possible, as they can make it harder for users to remember or type your address. If your preferred name isn’t available, consider slight variations, adding keywords, or exploring different domain extensions like .net, .co or industry-specific TLDs.

ISG Development can help you brainstorm and evaluate domain name options, check availability and choose a name that supports your branding and marketing goals.

Domain Registration
What is the difference between a Registry, a Registrar, and a Reseller?
A registry is the organization responsible for managing and maintaining the database of all domain names within a specific top-level domain (TLD), such as “.com” or “.org.” They oversee the technical and administrative functions of domain name registration.

A registrar is a company or organization who is accredited by the registry to sell and manage domain name registrations. Registrars handle the customer-facing aspects of domain name registration, such as allowing users to search for and register domain names.

A reseller is a third-party company or individual that sells domain names on behalf of a registrar. Resellers often offer additional services like website hosting or custom support, but they rely on the registrar to manage the actual domain registration process.

Can ISG Development help me register a domain name?
Yes. As a reseller for one of the leading domain registrars, we can assist you with the entire domain registration process, from checking availability and choosing a name to registering and configuring it for your website or email. Whether you’re starting fresh or need help transferring an existing name, we can ensure everything is set up properly and securely.
Why should I register my domain with you?
Registering your domain with ISG Development offers several important advantages. We partner with globally recognized, highly reputable registrars, enabling us to provide competitive pricing and unmatched service. Unlike many well-known registrars that promote low first-year pricing but later impose steep renewal fees with little to no support, we work exclusively with partners who prioritize reliability, responsive support, and transparent, fair renewal rates.

By registering your domain through us, you gain dependable assistance when issues arise and avoid unexpected costs. Consolidating your domain, website, and hosting in one place also streamlines management, billing and access to help when you need it.

Once I register my domain, do I own it?
When you register a domain name, you gain exclusive rights to use it for as long as you maintain the registration, but it’s more like a renewable lease than permanent ownership. As long as you keep the registration current and don’t violate any terms, no one else can use that domain. We recommend keeping your registration up to date and ensuring your contact information is accurate to avoid accidental loss.
Someone registered the name I want. How can I get it?
It can be difficult to get a domain name once someone else has registered it. In cases involving trademark infringement, you may file a complaint under ICANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). In the event of a bad-faith registration (cybersquatting), the UDRP may provide a means for expedited, lower-cost resolution than traditional litigation.

However, in many cases where the other party has legitimate rights to the name, it may be easier, quicker and more cost-effective to come up with an alternative name. You can also attempt to purchase the domain name directly from the holder, although this can be costly depending on their asking price.

We always recommend protecting your brand identity by registering your domain name, and any related names you may plan to use, even if you’re not launching your site right away.

There's no website for the name I want. Why can't I register it?
Even if a domain doesn’t appear to be in use, it may still be registered. A domain can exist without an active website or may be in a transition phase like redemption or deletion. The only reliable way to check domain availability is through a proper WHOIS lookup, not by simply typing the name into your browser.
How do I register a sub domain such as store.example.com?
You don’t need to register subdomains separately, and there is no additional cost to create them. Once you’ve registered a domain, you have full control over creating subdomains like “store.example.com” or “blog.example.com.” These are configured through your DNS or hosting provider.

If you’re hosting with ISG Development, we can help you set up and manage subdomains through our administration tools or handle the setup for you.

Domain Management and Settings
What is DNS, and what does it do?
The Domain Name System (DNS) is the system that translates domain names, such as example.com, into numerical IP addresses that computers use to locate websites, send email and deliver other Internet services. Think of it as the internet’s phonebook. Without DNS, typing a domain name into your browser wouldn’t lead anywhere.
What are name servers, and why are they important?
Name servers are a key part of DNS. They tell the Internet where to find the DNS records for your domain, such as where your website is hosted or how your email should be routed. When you register a domain, you must assign name servers to handle all DNS lookups related to your domain.

ISG Development provides name server management and DNS configuration at no additional cost with any domain registered through us. We ensure your domain is properly set up and everything runs smoothly from day one.

What are DNS record types like A, CNAME, MX, and TXT?
There are different types of DNS records used to control how your domain works. A and CNAME records point your domains and subdomains to the webservers hosting your website and services. MX records handle routing of your email, while TXT records are used for things like verifying domain ownership, improving email delivery, and helping fight spam. ISG Development can manage these records for you, so you don’t have to worry about the details.
What is a parked domain, and can I set one up?
A parked domain is a domain name that doesn’t point to a full website but instead displays a placeholder or redirect page. Parked domains are often used to reserve a name for future use, display a maintenance or “coming soon” message, redirect visitors to a primary domain, or protect brand names and common misspellings. If you’re an existing customer, we can set up parked domains for you at no additional cost.
Can I redirect my domain or subdomain to another location?
Yes, we can easily set up redirects for your domain or subdomains to external locations, such as another website or URL. This can be useful if you want to guide visitors to a different page or site without changing your domain name. Our team can assist with setting up redirects, whether you need a simple redirect or more complex configurations. If you’re an existing customer, we offer this service at no additional cost.
Domain Transfers
Can I transfer my domain to you from my current registrar?
Yes, we can help you transfer your domain from your current registrar to ISG Development’s registrars.
What are the advantages of transferring my domain to you?
Transferring your domain to ISG Development’s registrars allows you to manage your domain, website and hosting all in one place, streamlining billing and support. We partner with registrars known for transparent, fair pricing and reliable customer support — unlike many who impose steep renewal fees and offer very limited assistance if issues arise. By consolidating your services with us, you benefit from personalized assistance and support from a single, trusted provider.
Are there any restrictions or requirements for transferring my domain?
Most domains can be transferred, but there may be some restrictions based on your current registrar or the domain extension. Generally, your domain must be at least 60 days old, and your registration must be unlocked for the transfer to proceed.
What is an authorization code and how do I get one?
An authorization code (also known as an EPP code) is required for transferring your domain from one registrar to another. It helps protect against unauthorized transfers. You can obtain this code from your current registrar by requesting it through their account dashboard or contacting their support team.
How long does a domain transfer take?
Domain transfers typically take between 5-7 days to complete, although it can vary depending on the domain extension and your current registrar’s processes.
Will my website or email be affected during the domain transfer process?
No, your website and email services will not be affected during the domain transfer process as long as your domain’s DNS settings remain unchanged.
If you help me register a domain, can I move it to another registrar later?
Yes, you are free to transfer your domain to another registrar at any time after the initial registration period, though it’s generally recommended to wait 60 days after registration before transferring.
Domain Renewal
Do I need to renew my domain name every year?
Yes, domain names require annual renewal. When you register a domain, you get exclusive rights to use it for a year. Each year, you renew it, extending your registration for an additional year. We provide simple renewal processes and offer automatic renewals for your convenience.
How do I renew my domain name?
To manually renew your domain name, log in to our user admin console and go to domain names. Select the domain(s) you want to renew and choose “Renew Domains”. After completing checkout, your domain(s) will be renewed. To avoid missing a renewal, you can also enable auto-renewal, which ensures your domains are renewed automatically before they expire.
What happens if I do not renew my domain name?
Starting about 60 days before your domain’s expiration, we’ll send reminder emails to the address on file for your account. If the domain is not renewed by its expiration date, it typically enters a brief grace period (around 5 days), during which you can still renew it at standard rates. However, DNS services will be interrupted, and your website and email may stop functioning.

If not renewed during the grace period, the domain normally will enter a Redemption Period (typically 30 days). You can still recover the domain during this time, but many registrars often charge an additional redemption fee which can be $100 or more. After the Redemption Period, the domain enters what is typically a 5-day “Pending Delete” period, after which it is removed from the registry and becomes available for anyone to register.

The registrars we partner with at ISG Development extend the grace period to 30 days and charge more reasonable fees if a domain enters redemption. However, we strongly recommend renewing your domain well in advance of the expiration date or enabling automatic renewals to avoid service disruption or losing your domain.

Note: The exact timing of grace periods, redemption policies and fees can vary depending on the domain extension (TLD) and the registrar. Please refer to your specific registrar’s policy for details. Also, while domains should become available for registration once deleted, they are often quickly acquired by drop-catch services and then offered for sale at premium prices.

What does it mean if my domain name is in "Redemption"?
If a domain is not renewed by the end of its grace period (typically 5 days after expiration), it enters a Redemption Period, typically lasting 30 days. During this time, all DNS services are suspended, and your website and email will not function. You can usually still recover the domain, but registrars often charge a redemption fee of $100 or more. Note that other parties may also attempt to claim the name during this time, and some registrars may auction off domains which are in redemption. After the Redemption Period, the domain normally enters a short “Pending Delete” period (typically 5 days), after which it becomes available for registration by anyone.

Getting Started
What’s the difference between a website, a domain name and hosting?
A website is the collection of pages, images, and content that people see when they visit your business online. A domain name (like yourbusiness.com) is the web address people type in to access your site. Hosting refers to the server space where your website’s files are stored and made accessible on the Internet. All three work together: the domain points to the hosting, which delivers the website.
In addition to websites, do you register domain names and provide hosting?
Yes, we offer both domain registration and managed cloud hosting services. Some of our website or hosting plans may include a domain name, while in other cases, domains and hosting are available at an additional cost. We’re happy to help you choose the best options for your needs.
How much does a website cost?
Website costs can vary depending on the size, features, and complexity of the project. A basic website will be less expensive than a custom solution with advanced functionality. At ISG Development, we offer competitive pricing and aim to work within your budget, without compromising on quality. We don’t believe in cookie-cutter pricing; instead, we provide tailored estimates based on your specific goals and requirements, so you know exactly what to expect.
Do you charge per-page pricing for website development?
No. We don’t believe in per-page pricing because it doesn’t reflect the true scope of a project. Your website’s cost should be based on the overall functionality, design, and content requirements — not the number of pages. While larger sites may take more time and effort, adding a single page shouldn’t mean unexpected charges. We focus on delivering value based on what your project actually needs.
How long does it take to build a website?
The timeline for building a website depends on the size and complexity of the project. A basic informational site might be completed in just a couple of weeks, while larger or more custom sites can take several weeks to a few months. The process typically includes planning, design, content creation, development, testing, and final deployment. At ISG Development, we work closely with clients to establish clear timelines and keep projects on track.
Design and Content
What’s the difference between custom website development and template-based websites?
Template-based websites may offer a low upfront cost and quick setup, but they come with significant limitations. Custom-built websites are uniquely designed to fit your business needs, providing full control over layout, branding, and functionality. In contrast, templates are often reused by many others, restrict customization, and may not be optimized for search engines or all browsers. Custom sites are more scalable, easier to maintain, and better suited for businesses that want to stand out and grow over time.
What kind of content do I need to provide?
We’ll guide you through what’s needed for your website, such as text for your pages, images, product descriptions, or other materials. If you don’t have everything ready, we can help with sourcing stock photography or even assist with content creation, depending on your plan and needs.
What if I don’t have a logo or branding? Can you assist?
We can assist you in developing your logo and branding or connect you with our trusted partners who specialize in creating unique visual identities. Whether you need guidance or a full design solution, we’re here to help.
Do you offer copywriting, content creation or photography services?
We can help with content creation, including copywriting, blog posts and product descriptions. Additionally, we work with trusted partners who can assist with social media content, photography and other creative needs. If you’re looking for specific content, just let us know and we can connect you with the right resources.
Can you redesign my existing website?
Absolutely. Whether you’re looking for a full overhaul or just a modern refresh, we can work with your current site and content to improve design, performance, and user experience. We’ll also ensure the updated site meets current web standards.
Features and Optimization
Will my website be mobile-friendly?
Yes. Every website we build is designed to be fully responsive, meaning it will look and function properly on all devices—including smartphones and tablets. Mobile usability is a standard part of our development process, not an add-on.
Do you offer e-commerce website development?
Yes. We can build custom e-commerce websites tailored to your business needs. Whether you’re selling a few products or managing a full online store, we offer secure, scalable solutions with features like shopping carts, payment gateways, and inventory management.
Will my website be search engine friendly?
Yes. We follow best practices for on-page SEO during development, including clean code, proper use of tags, and optimized page structure. We also offer additional SEO services if you want to go further with your search engine visibility.
Will I be able to track visitors to my website?
Yes. We can integrate your website with tools like Google Analytics or other platforms that provide detailed insights into your site traffic, including the number of visitors, where they’re coming from, and how they interact with your pages. This data can help you make informed decisions and measure the effectiveness of your site.
Can you integrate my site with social media or third-party tools?
Yes. We can connect your website to your social media accounts and integrate third-party tools such as contact forms, newsletters, CRM systems, calendars, or payment platforms — depending on your needs. Just let us know what you’re using and we’ll help make it all work together smoothly.
Post-Launch and Support
Who owns the website after it’s built?
You do. Once the project is completed and paid for, all rights to the website design and content are transferred to you. We believe in transparency and full ownership for our clients.
Can I make changes to my site after it's completed?
Absolutely! Flexibility is a key part of good web design. Every site we build is designed with future updates and expansions in mind. We typically use dynamic structures to simplify site-wide changes and minimize repetition of common elements. For clients who need frequent updates, we offer content management systems (CMS) that make it easy to manage your site without technical expertise.
Do you provide ongoing maintenance or support?
Yes. We offer ongoing support and maintenance plans to keep your website secure, updated, and running smoothly. Whether you need technical help, updates, or backups, we’re here to support you after launch.
Hosting Basics
I already bought a domain name. Why do I need hosting?
Registering a domain name secures your right to use that domain for services like websites and email. However, after registration, you need a hosting provider to connect your domain to servers that will manage requests for your website 24/7. A hosting provider handles essential services like storing and publishing website pages, as well as receiving and temporarily storing your incoming email messages.
Can I just host my website on my own server?
While technically possible, hosting your website on your own server is not ideal for most people. A web server requires continuous, high-speed internet access, redundancy and advanced security to protect against hackers. Configuring, securing and maintaining a web server requires a lot of resources, making it a challenge for most individuals or businesses. With affordable and reliable hosting options available, it’s usually better to leave the technical aspects to a professional hosting provider.
What is cloud hosting, and how does it differ from traditional hosting?
Cloud hosting uses a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage and process data. Unlike traditional hosting, which typically uses a single server, cloud hosting offers more scalability, flexibility, and reliability by distributing resources across multiple servers.
What is the difference between "Managed Hosting" and other types of hosting?
Managed hosting means the technical operation and upkeep of your website and email are handled by experienced professionals. This includes support services, system maintenance, updates and more. With unmanaged hosting, you’re typically responsible for most, if not all, aspects of setup and maintenance, and support may only be available for hardware issues, often at an extra cost. ISG Development offers fully managed hosting plans with a comprehensive range of support services at competitive prices.
Plan Features and Limits
How much does web hosting cost?
Our hosting plans are competitively priced based on your storage, bandwidth and support needs. Please see our hosting plans for current pricing and features.
Do you offer hosting with unlimited disk space? Unlimited bandwidth?
No, we don’t offer “unlimited” hosting plans because they often come with hidden restrictions. Many plans marketed as “unlimited” impose limitations on resource usage, such as CPU, memory or number of processes, which typically apply long before you could reach the stated “unlimited” limits. ISG Development offers clearly defined hosting plans with competitive rates, disk space and bandwidth allocations that meet the needs of our clients without the fine print limitations.
Do you offer plans with hundreds of gigabytes of disk space and/or bandwidth?
If your website requires hundreds of gigabytes of disk space or bandwidth, we can accommodate your needs with dedicated servers tailored to your specifications. However, be cautious of providers offering “unlimited” or excessively large plans in the hundreds of gigabytes or terabytes. These offerings are often misleading. In reality, such plans may come with many restrictions, just like the “unlimited” plans. If you need that much space or bandwidth, let’s discuss your specific requirements so we can find the right solution for you.
What if my website experiences high traffic spikes?
Our hosting plans are designed to scale to meet traffic demands. If you expect a sudden traffic spike, we can help optimize your hosting resources, or upgrade your plan to ensure consistent performance and uptime.
Can I upgrade my hosting plan, later, if needed?
Absolutely. If your website grows or your needs change, you can upgrade your hosting plan at any time. Just contact us and we’ll help you transition smoothly to the plan that best fits your needs.
Do you offer custom hosting solutions?
Yes. If your website has unique requirements that go beyond standard hosting plans—such as higher resource needs, specific software, or enhanced security — we can provide a custom solution. From tailored server configurations to scalable infrastructure, we’ll work with you to develop a hosting environment that meets your exact needs.
Capabilities and Compatibility
Can I use custom software or CMS such as WordPress on your hosting plans?
Yes, we support all major content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal, as well as custom software. If you have specific requirements, our team will work with you to set up your website the way you need.
Can I host an e-commerce website with your hosting plans?
Yes, we offer hosting plans which are fully capable of supporting e-commerce websites, including secure transaction processing, fast load times and high availability to ensure a smooth shopping experience for your customers.
Can I host multiple websites on one hosting plan?
Yes, we can support multiple websites under a single hosting account based on your specific needs. This setup can be a convenient and cost-effective solution if you manage more than one domain. While we don’t list this as a standard plan option, we’re happy to provide a customized solution. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Can I use my own domain name with your hosting?
Absolutely. If you’ve already registered a domain name through another provider, you can easily use it with our hosting services. We’ll provide the DNS settings you need, or we can assist you with updating them. If you’d prefer, you can also transfer your domain to us for streamlined management.
Can I use domain name aliases and subdomains with my hosting plan?
Yes. We support domain name aliases, allowing you to point multiple domain names to the same website, ideal for branding, marketing or redirecting traffic from alternate domains. We also support subdomains (such as blog.example.com or store.example.com), which you can use to organize different sections of your site. Just let us know what you need, and we’ll help set it up.
Security and Reliability
Why do I need secure (HTTPS) hosting?
Today’s web standards require websites to be fully secure. Modern browsers will flag — and often block — sites which are not served over HTTPS, warning users the site is “Not Secure.” Even if you only need to protect certain content, securing your entire site with HTTPS ensures better performance, trust and compatibility. HTTPS is essential for user privacy, search engine rankings, and overall credibility.
Do your hosting plans include SSL certificates?
Yes, all of our hosting plans include a standard SSL certificate at no additional cost, ensuring your website is securely served over HTTPS. This certificate provides essential encryption for your website, protecting both your visitors and your data, and boosting trust and credibility.

If you need an Organizational Validation (OV) certificate, Extended Validation (EV) certificate or a wildcard certificate for more advanced security, we can provide these options as well, at competitive prices. Please contact us for more details on upgrading your SSL certificate.

How is my website protected from cyberattacks?
We implement multiple layers of security, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, DDoS protection, regular security patches and secure SSL certificates to protect your website from a wide range of cyber threats.
Will my website be backed up regularly?
Yes, we offer automated daily backups for your website data. In case of any unexpected issues, we can restore your website quickly. Additional backup services can also be arranged if you require more frequent or custom backup options.
What is uptime, and why is it important?
Uptime refers to the percentage of time your website is accessible and functioning properly. It is crucial because high uptime ensures that your website is available to visitors at all times. We strive to provide 99.9% uptime for all our hosting plans.
Migrating to ISG Development
Can I move my existing website to ISG Development?
Yes — we make it easy to migrate your website to our hosting. Most website transfers are handled by us at no additional cost for existing customers. We’ll review your current setup and coordinate the move to ensure minimal downtime.
Do you help with moving my website to your hosting?
Yes. In most cases, we can handle the entire migration for you, including transferring files, databases, and email if needed. We’ll also test the site before going live to ensure everything works smoothly.
Do you offer email hosting?
Yes. All of our hosting plans also support email hosting, allowing you to create and manage custom email addresses using your domain name (e.g., yourname@yourdomain.com). Our email service includes webmail access, as well as compatibility with desktop and mobile email clients using IMAP or POP3. Spam filtering and secure mail transfer are also included to keep your communication safe and reliable.
Does you email hosting include webmail?
Yes. Our email hosting includes access to a full-featured webmail interface, allowing you to send, receive and manage your email from anywhere with an internet connection.
Hosting
Can I install custom software or scripts on my site?
Yes, we support most custom software and scripts, as long as they comply with your hosting plan’s capabilities and our Acceptable Use Policy. If you have special requirements, such as a custom software stack or applications with specific resource or configuration needs, we can provide a custom or dedicated hosting solution tailored to meet those requirements.
Do you support CGI scripts or cgi-bin directories?
No, we do not normally support CGI scripts or the use of cgi-bin directories. These are considered outdated technologies and are not included in our standard hosting environment. If you have a specific legacy requirement, please contact us to discuss whether a custom hosting solution might be appropriate.
Can I use FTP to access my website files?
For security reasons, we do not offer traditional FTP access by default, as it transmits data in plain text and poses security risks. However, we do provide more secure alternatives such as SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) for customers who need direct access to their website files. If you require this kind of access, please contact us and we’ll help set up a secure connection tailored to your needs.
Do you offer dedicated IP addresses with hosting plans?
Yes, we offer dedicated IP addresses for customers who need them. A dedicated IP can improve email deliverability and provide enhanced security. If you require a dedicated IP, please contact us to discuss your needs and we can provide a tailored solution.
Do you offer hosting plans with dedicated servers?
Yes, we can provide both dedicated cloud instances and dedicated hosts based on your needs. Whether you require the scalability of a cloud-based instance or the control and performance of a fully dedicated physical server, we can help design a solution that fits your requirements. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs and we’ll provide the best option for your project.
Do you employ Linux or Windows based hosting?
We exclusively use Linux-based hosting, specifically the Debian distribution. Debian is widely regarded as one of the best choices for a server operating system due to its stability, security and reliability — all essential for dependable web hosting. It also benefits from a large, active development community and long-term support, which helps us maintain a secure and consistent environment for your website. Our servers are actively monitored and regularly updated with the latest security patches and system upgrades to ensure optimal performance and protection.

If you have specific technical requirements that call for a different operating system or configuration, we can provide alternative hosting solutions tailored to your needs.
