Have you received an automated call claiming your business listing isn’t verified and customers won’t be able to find you using “Google Voice Search”? Perhaps the message warns that your listing is about to expire or requires urgent action. Recent versions of these robocalls ask you to press “1” to verify your business or “2” to if you do not want your business included in the Google voice search results.
This is a common scam.
What You Need to Know
- There is no special registration required for your business to appear in Google’s voice search results
- Google does not call businesses to request activation or verification of a “Voice Search” listing
- A properly maintained Google Business Profile is all you need to appear in Google results — including voice searches
These calls are almost always automated. Pressing “1” will connect you to a live agent whose goal is to convince you to pay for unnecessary or fraudulent services. They may falsely claim affiliation with Google to gain your trust. These are yet another version of the Search Engine Submission Scam.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
- Robocalls claiming to be from Google, Apple or Amazon
- Warnings that your business is “unlisted” or will be removed from search results
- Claims of required fees for business listings or pressure to sign up for monthly services
